SUMMARY:¡Ay nanita! Mexican figures of monstrous womanhood and nationality
DESCRIPTION:La Llorona (The Weeping Woman)\, brujas (witches)\, Tlahuelpuchi\, La Mulata de Córdoba… sinister women haunt our stories\, fixed in our imaginations.\nFemale monstrosity has for long been a crucial component in the construction of nationality\, giving form and negotiating notions of gender\, class and race in Mexican visual culture. This talk will approach their cries\, cackles and growls to examine why are we both fascinated and repulsed by their images and representations. Most importantly\, we will ask them personally: what can they tell us about national identity?\nValeria Villegas Lindvall from Institutionen för Kulturvetenskaper\, Göteborgs Universitetet\n\nValeria Villegas Lindvall is a Doctor in Film Studies\, and specializes on Latin American horror film with a feminist and decolonial focus. She is also part of the editorial board for MAI: Feminism and Visual Culture and of the advisory board of MAI Imprint at Punctum Books. Her doctoral dissertation\, Wicked Women & Witches. Subversive readings of the female monster in Mexican and Argentinian Horror Film (2021) takes to task the figures of La Llorona and the bruja (witch) as monstrous bastions of resistance in visual culture. She has recently collaborated in Women Make Horror: Filmmaking\, Feminism and Genre (ed. Dr. Alison Peirse\, 2020) and The body onscreen in the digital age. Essays on Voyeurism\, Violence and Power (ed. Dr. Susan Flynn\, 2021).
