¡Ay nanita! Mexican figures of monstrous womanhood and nationality

septiembre 7, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Ay nanita
La Llorona (The Weeping Woman), brujas (witches), Tlahuelpuchi, La Mulata de Córdoba… sinister women haunt our stories, fixed in our imaginations.
Female monstrosity has for long been a crucial component in the construction of nationality, giving form and negotiating notions of gender, class and race in Mexican visual culture. This talk will approach their cries, cackles and growls to examine why are we both fascinated and repulsed by their images and representations. Most importantly, we will ask them personally: what can they tell us about national identity?
